Every passing day, humans find new ways to prove their inhumanity. This story of a pregnant elephant who lost her life by trying to consume a pineapple filled with explosives is sure to break your heart.
On the 27th of May, a pregnant elephant suffered an extremely painful death in Kerala, India, after biting a firecracker-stuffed pineapple as it exploded inside its mouth. The explosion caused severe damages to the elephant’s jaw, eventually resulting in her tragic death.
The incident was highlighted throughout the globe when Mohan Krishnan, a forest officer who is part of the team that tried to save the elephant, posted the heartbreaking story on his Facebook page. A spokesperson from Kerala Forest Department told Sky news that putting fireworks inside food is a common practice carried out by farmers in order to protect their crops from wild animals. According to the officials, the animal has walked out of the Silent Valley National Park, searching for food. After reaching the Malappuram District, it has bit on to the firecracker-stuffed fruit.
According to Maneka Gandhi, an animal rights activist, Malappuram District is one of the worst places for animals in India, being famous for such incidents. In addition to Malappuram being the most-violent district in the country, Gandhi stated that every 3 days, an elephant is killed in Kerala.
After the explosion, the elephant was no longer able to eat due to the severe injuries caused to its tongue and mouth. Even after the crackers exploded, the poor pregnant animal have neither crushed a single home, nor harmed a single human being. She just ran across the village with the excruciating pain and got inside the Velliyar River, with part of her head hanging underwater. Though the officials attempted to lead her out of the water using two other captive elephants, all attempts went to waste as she did not move. She later died then and there, standing in the water.
She was later transported to the forest and cremated there.
The murder of this 15-year-old elephant was registered by local authorities, and they are actively carrying out investigations. Two organizations even stepped forward to offer monetary rewards to people who can provide information, so that relevant arrests can be made.
Take a look at how social media users payed tribute and honored the elephant using artworks and illustrations.
