Practical Tips For Restaurant Workers

Working in the service industry, in general, is difficult, but this is especially true when it comes to restaurants! Being a restaurant worker is often a thankless job and if you work in front of the house, you have to deal with the general public which can sometimes be a nightmare.

Tips For Restaurant Workers

Getting yelled at by people you don’t even know for things that aren’t your fault isn’t anyone’s idea of a good time. That being said, working in restaurants can be lucrative, flexible, and fun- which is why many people choose this career path. If you are new at it or feeling like you need a little pep talk after a particularly hard shift, here are some practical tips for restaurant workers.

Lean On Your Manager

While you should be fully self-sufficient and able to do your job well without any help, there are times when you will need to lean on the manager on duty at your restaurant. For example, if you have a difficult customer that you are dealing with, sometimes it is much easier to pass this patron off to the manager so that they can deal with them.

Managers have certain tactics they can use to make customers happy that a server, bartender, or busser may not have the authority to offer or the time to deal with.

If you have accidentally spilled red wine on a customer and they are angry, apologize and go and get your manager. The manager may decide to offer to send their shirt to a professional cleaner, or say other things that you aren’t able to. Leaning on your manager doesn’t make you bad at your job – they are there to support you!

Get Enough Sleep

Unfortunately, being a restaurant employee can cause you to fall into a vicious cycle filled with unhealthy habits. Restaurant workers tend to stay up later, drink more, and get less sleep than the average person in a different industry. Knowing that you may be more susceptible to this type of lifestyle because of your job can actually help you to avoid it.

Tips For Restaurant Workers

One of the first and most important things you should do to avoid falling into the same type of patterns you may have seen your coworkers go through is to get plenty of sleep each night! Sleep is more important than you may ever imagine so be sure to go to bed as early as possible each night. If you are not waking up feeling well-rested, do some research to figure out if there is something out there you can use to try and help!

Being a restaurant worker isn’t easy, and not everyone is cut out for it. However, it can also be an exciting and fulfilling job. Hopefully, these tips help to make it more bearable for you!
